Recently during the big snows, I had used my tractor during the night as well as day. I had never used it at night for any length till now. I had the lights on for along time. After about an hour it died on me. The lights never went dim and I had no warning the battery was being drained. I jumped it and it started right up. I just could not use the lights. I checked the alternator output, and about 2amps was all it was putting out. My question is should I look for a new alternator for a same replacement. Are these alts ok to rebuild? Or can I go to O'Reillys and just look for one that will bolt up? This tractor only has about 100 hours on it. Not sure why the alternator output is only 2amp. I bought this tractor several years ago from a Ford Dealer. That only used it for odds and ends. When I bought it still had the tips on the tires. Even though they are weathered. Anyway what I am getting at is maybe just age is the alternator problem and not usage…..thanks for any advise anyone would have.

Check all connections first. Alt, voltage regulator, battery, fuses. Try the cheap/free stuff first. You can always take the alternator to O'reilly's and they will bench test it for free. A few folks have put a Delco internal regulator alternator on these, not much modifying to make one fit.

I wouldn't hold out much hope for reviving a 20 years old alternator. But you might have trouble finding an aftermarket 3 wire that fits. If you know how to convert to an aftermarket 1-wire, ok. If not, you might want to stick with an OE replacement. Chip Uren at ARTRAC (Clarksville, AR) should be able to fix you right up. Good chance your 304 has the same size as my TS354Cwas; I'm thinking in the 25-30 amp range.

Thanks for the advise. Yes I checked battery, fuse and rewired things. I'm am pretty sure I have eliminated those things. So I may take the Chip route. He got the manuals for my tractor a couple of years ago. I'll see if he can get me OE Alternator. Thanks guys for the help…greatly helpful…….

Adding a Delco 10Si three wire alterantor is a snap on these Chinese tractors. Cheaper than OEM and lots of output, too. Best thing I ever did for my Jinma's electrical system. Thre are posts covering how to do the changeover on this and other forums – check them out before you buy an OEM unit.

Ditto on the 10SI alternators! I replaced the OEM Chinese alternator on my NT254 with a 63A 10SI alternator from an '84 Chevy Camaro when I added several large lights and the OEM alternator couldn't handle them. Paid about $65 for a rebuilt unit at Advance auto. I am sure a junkyard unit would be even cheaper.

I ALSO put a delco alternator, wiring was fairly easy, used a small dash lite for exciter wire.
Made an angle exstention with the old adjusting bracket. Bought the unit from a local
junk yard for 25 bucks, it's working for two years.

When I replaced my wimpy OEM alternator with the Delco 10Si alternator I added a voltmeter for a real-time reading of system output. The OEM ammeter isn't up to handling theoutput of the Delco so I simply bypassed it. It reads discharge amps but not charging – the voltmeter handles that for me. I also bypassed the OEM regulator entirely as it was causing blown fuses all the time. MY system now handles the 4 additional driving and work lights plus all the OEM lighting without a whimper and the battery is always fully charged. The OEM alternator pulley fit perfectly on the Delco alternator, too. I did have to make a new bracket for the alternator becuae the OEM one jus tdidn't quite fit right on the Delco. That was no big deal though, and well worth the fewe minutes – I now have a dependable charging system with sufficient output. I also replaced the belt with one of the link-belts sold by Harbor Freight tools. I'm sold on those things after using one on my table saw a fwe years ago.

I also replaced my alternator in my Jinma with a Delco. It was an easy change over.
