        Reference OLD FORUM dozer tilt cylinder….Bob Rooks says the hydraulic fittings on the dozer are  M18 x 1.5 ORFS (O-ring Face Seal) except for the pump suction. I had installed a 0.64″ x 0.04″ copper disc with 1/16″ hole in each port of the tilt cylinder to get better control. Today I checked one disk and it looks great.

        My reason for opening the fitting was to measure the port ID which was 0.28″. My thinking was to make a steel insert that would be like a hat with an oversize brim. This would keep the disc from shifting. However, if I used a rubber washer on top of the steel disc would this really be necessary.

        Bob…What do you think of a thin rubber washer on top of a steel disc for the face seal?

          A washer all by itself will blow out in seconds, it must have a capture groove.

          The ORFS fittings have an O-ring capture groove on one part, if you can duplicate that with your steel piece, fine, but that's why the use of copper – to get the “crush” that takes the place of the O-ring.

            Copper is great stuff. Had a Model 15 CAT that kept blowing head gaskets. Made one out of 1/16″ copper and never had another problem at least with the head gasket. Every time I wanted to use the tractor, I had to dump in 5 gallons of gas. Finally sold it.

              WOW! laughA Cat 15 evil, 4 cylinder gas engine. Barely remember those. Some had aftermarket rear mounted hydraulics I think confused.

                Never heard of  after market hydraulics. Some were orchard models where you sit low and others like mine where you sit up high. Strictly for pulling. I do remember attaching a logging chain to a willow. Just happened to look back and see the tree was pulled up (root still attached) and starting to fall in my direction. Left the tractor running in a different direction. Also remember  crossing a creek and the next thing I know  was I laying on the hood. That is why I purchased the chinese dozer. Nice roll cage, seat belts, PTO and price.

                  Not to beat a dead horse, but if the copper disc restrictor ever fails, I do not want to go backwards. Looking at the Parker O-Ring Handbook, Design Chart 4-2–Face Seal Glands, I see where the gland (capture grove) depth is 0.050 to 0.054 for a 1/16″ O-Ring. I then looked at my Harbor copper washer set and find a 1/4″ copper washer that is 0.04″ thick and 0.56″ OD. Would a steel disc with 1/4″ copper washer work? It looks like the 1/4″ hole is big enough that any shifting of the copper washer will not cover the hole in the steel disc (restrictor).

                    I think I understand what you're saying.

                    A steel restrictor disc would require a copper sealing washer on each side of it in lieu of any O-rings. In that case the copper could be the equal of shim stock, say .015″.
