        Hi everyone,

I haven't been here in quite a while. Everything was going fine after i put in a new solenoid. Now I have a new problem. The day before yesterday, I used the tractor with no problems. Yesterday I tried to start it and it cranked strong, but I stopped cranking to give it more gas. I don't use the foot pedal, I use the hand throttle. When I tried to start it again, I heard a snap and everything went dead. None of the gages worked when I turned the key on except the gas gauge. When I tried the light buttons, the gas guage needle jumped up and down. I thought it might be a blown fuse, so I checked them and they were OK. I disconnected the battery and charged it. I also cleaned the battery terminals. When I replaced the battery, the guages and lights and horn all worked, but when I tried to start it I heard a snap again and everything when totally dead again. If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it.

        Thanks

Sounds like you have a loose or bad ground, follow your ground cable from the battery to where it attachs to the tractor, I think you will find your problem

I already disconnected the cables and cleaned them and reattached them. Didn't notice any problem.

You may have had a 30 amp fuse blow/pop. If so, could be related to the key switch.

Did you hear a 'click' or a 'snap'?

I'm guessing you're hearing the relay/solenoid, but the starter is refusing to turn.

Can you turn the engine over by jumping the terminals with a screwdriver? Careful! Make sure the tractor is out of gear before trying this!

Maybe the starter just needs a good cleaning or brushes.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I check the ground cable as someone suggested and it was loose and rusty. I am going to replace it see what happens. When I tightened it I could start with the key.

                  Thanks again

That's why a loose ground and a bowl of Rice Crispies sound the same….
