I have an 2005 NorTarc 204 that is having issues getting started, even in this warm weather. I turn the key and it tries to fire, but not quit, just a lot of white smoke. If I let it turn long enough it does finaly fire and run good from there on. I replaced the fuel filter and it did not make a difference. I wonder if it is a compression issue. Not producing enough heat to fire. Using glow plugs help, but I should not need them in the summer. When I first got it I only used them in winter, or cool fall/spring days.

The white smoke is unburned fuel from a cold combustion chamber. You could have dribbling injectors (pintle and seat are dirty), you could also have a dirty air cleaner. I recommend taking the injectors to a diesel shop for cleaning.
Did this happen all at once or grew progressively worse over time?
Do you notice any loss of coolant or cross contamination with the lube oil?

New injectors are around $ 50.00 each, I have found that diesel injection shops will charge alot more than that to clean and adjust the injectors,plus your time and fuel to take them, pick them up.On the chinese tractors I think it's less cost just to replace them, this does not hold true on the Cat, Perkins,Cummins,ect. because those injectors cost $$$$$$$$$$.

cant see this being a injector problem, white smoke is lack of compression.
what engine do you have.
im guessing its a direct injection engine as you expect it to start with out glow plugs.
if you do a compression test, you need to have 550psi min.
if not its a head off job.
i would like to know what engine you have.
