Hi Frank, welcome to the new site.
He bot it new and duzn't know what year he bot it in?
These are Chinese, they are not licensed, there is no VI#, just a s/n, and I don't know that it has any real correlation to the date of manufacture.
What was the year and month of the original purchase, and from whom was it purchased?
What does it say on the original sales receipt?

Welcome Frank.
My dozer engine has a date on the label (right side) which I assume is within a year of the dozer's manufacture date. My engine date is 2002.5 which I again assume is the last half of 2002. Hope this helps.

Also, if was manufactured over nine or ten years ago it could be a Guilin and not a Yuchai, and I don't know if the serial numbers carried through. Some of the Guilin's had different engines, two, three, and four cylinder models.

i can understand not knowing when it was bought the only way that i can figure how old mine is ; is know that i bought it the same year i retired, that is half the equasion ; then i just have to try and remember what year that was;
if it is nortrac then he can call northern and they should beable to pull it up especilly if he has purchased other things from them; as they usually keep your account under the same #

Welcome to the best source of info you'll get on these machines.
Don't get too hung up on the year. It's not like buying a car. I just bought mine and it's a 2002 but only had less than 100 hours on it. It's the hours that count. As the dealer if the hour meter works or if it has been replaced.
Oh…and if you want, take a bunch of pictures of it and post them here.

Well, It took a while but the owner finally got back to me on the Dozer. The serial number is YCT0608120. He thinks it's a 2005 or 6. He's the second owner. He purchased it 3 years ago with 30 hours from the original owner whom purchased it from Northern Tool and now it has 60 hours on it. All the fluids were changed about 1 year ago. He's selling it because he doesn't use it. Supposedly it's in great shape and is always stored indoors. The price is now firm at $6,600.00. Gear Drive, No Problems. If everything is true, what do you guys think? Thanks, Frank

Well that's probably a question only you can answer. What are you going to do with it? It's a dozer but it's not a D6!
Does it have a shuttle clutch? They are particularly nice IMO but you can do without. The price sounds like a deal.

It's more to grade and fill dirt roads. Make trails thru my land. Haul trees for firewood. I'm retired and to me this is fun.
What is a shuttle clutch? It's 8 speed gear drive.

Grizz is correct, it's not a D6, BUT, it will do the work of a D3 (almost) – just takes longer. With only 60 hours and fresh lubricants, hydraulic oil, and coolant, sounds like a very good deal.
Caveats:
Take a grease gun and shoot a few zerks on the rollers and wishbone. If the zerks are tight and won't take grease, it has probably never been greased.
Check the zerk on the track adjuster – grease showing? Should be.
Maintenance and repair records?
How does it test drive?
If it doesn't have a shuttle clutch don't worry, it would only spoil you anyway.
It replaces the manual clutch and allows you to change direction without shifting gears. A sweet option.

If it was here, I'd buy it in a heartbeat – I could make that back in a couple of months doing driveway maintenance for folks up here in the rainforest.
