I have a 2004 Jinma 284 with a yangdong y385t engine. The alternator packed it in and I was wondering if anyone knows if I can replace it with a Japanese or American crossover. It has 4 wires on it. Thanks.

The answer is yes, but it's not exactly “plug 'n play”. First must know the amp rating of your old alternator. Most of the alternators that come on these tractors are nominally rated around 14 amps, which is almost at the maximum ampacity for 16 gauge wire. If you go with a larger capacity alternator you will have to increase output wire size. Most people upgrade to a Delco 10Si or 12Si “single wire” alternator. If you want optimum performance from a new alternator that was meant for automotive applications you must also replace the pulley with a smaller one.

            Hi Bob
Thanks for the reply. If I use one of these Delcos, do I just hook up the positive (red wire) and ignore the other three ? Any idea what size pulley to use? Thanks for the help.

If you go with the Delco Si series you will also have to replace your ammeter with a voltmeter. Sorry, forgot to mention that. For the pulley size, get the smallest you can for a B-section belt. It will be one of these two:

The wiring is simple and straightforward. You may remove your existing voltage regulator. Here is a simple diagram.

If you decide to just do the OEM replacement we have them in stock, By the time you buy the GM 1- wire, pulley, new belt, bracket, and put it on you could have put the OEM on in less than a hour and been out using the tractor again.I have found the OEM to be pretty dependable alternators

one thing you might consider if you are needing more than 14 amps change the alt. if you are not adding more electronical load use the stock type.

One thing in favor of the OEM alternator over the Delco Si is that the OEM is a totally-enclosed, fan-cooled unit (TEFC), desirable in dusty, dirty conditions.  The Delcos are open style and dirt and/or heavy dust will cause premature wear to them.

I believe Tommy now carries some OEM replacement alternators that are higher amperage than the the original 14-amp units, though not near the 72 amps that my Delco 12-Si puts out – but then I'm running several auxiliary lights for night work and a 1500W inverter, so I definitely need the higher output.
