i have a 2004 jm204. i was working on a project and the tractor started to sputter and i knew the fuel was low so i shut it down. when i was ready to use it it would not start at all. it turned over but not firing. so i told my brother to fill it with fuel and he put in kerosene. i tried starting it and it turnsover but no firing. i then drained out the kerosene and put in “real diesel”. i also replaced the fuel filter. still same symptoms. i took the bowl down and found 3 pieces of sediment otherwise it was a clean bowl.
i checked the fuel coming from the tank and it was a steady stream about an 1/8 inch wide. i checked and added a little oil to the pump until i saw it come from the overflow nipple and waited 20 minutes to make sure it was done before putting the breather and black cover on.
i don't know all of the parts names so please dumb down the suggestions for me. pics would help as well.

Have you tried the hand priming pump?

if it was running well before the low fuel condition you have air in the system use the hand pump as suggested open the vent on top of the fuel filter pump till air purges out then go to the inlet of the pump repeating same method

@ BOB, is the primer the piece that unscrews and pops up but does not come off with the spring?
i'm at work now but i will check.
@ david, is the vent the screw with the ring on it? below the three lines.

I am having a similar problem as tbj8257. I have a 2005 jm204. The tractor was running fine and then would not start. So I cracked a line at the engine and used the primer punp to check for fuel and I had to pump 150 times to get any fuel out the injector. It ran fine again for 5 hours of operation and then did the same thing.
I changed the fuel filter and then cracked a line and use the primer pump to get it running but it sputters and dies with in a few minutes.
I also don' know f the parts names so please dumb down the suggestions for me. pics would help as well.

you might want to check the fuel flow from the fuel tank there is a screen filter in the tank above the shut off valve.see if you have good flow there it sounds like you are fuel starving.

Thanks David, took it apart this weekend and the tank filter along with the filter in the petcock were clogged to the point of disintegration. Both filters were completely destroyed and clogged. Took the remaining filter material and clogging gunk out of the petcock and flushed tank. also cleaned the inline filter in the delivery hose. Tractors runs great now. I think I need to purchase replacements for the two filters at the petcock one looks like a finger and goes up into the tank attaches to the top of the petcock and the other is just above the sediment bowl. My manual doesn't show these so I will have to find a parts dealer and get a description of these.

You have to buy a replacement fuel sediment bowl to get both of those filters. They are brass and can be cleaned unless they have holes in them ? We have the replacement assemblies. Confirm which one you have the old style has a tapered thread that screws into the tank, the newer style is a straight thread that has a backup nut that tightens on the bottom of the fuel tank,if you are still unsure of what you have call the shop 979-865-4002 they will help you
