Ok Gents, Im up to 37 hour on my Jinma 254 and Im having an issue with it randomely popping out of gear. It doesnt matter what gear im in (havent really tried 3rd cause I dont use it often) or if I have a it under a load. It will just pop out gear. I was in the proccess of leveling some land and clearing some brush with a box scapper yesterday and I think it popped out of gear a total of 10 times in 3 hours! At first I thought maybe I was hitting with my leg or something hahaha. That wasnt the case. I havent seen anything where anyone else has had this issue.Ive seen role pin issues. Maybe I have a detent thats bad or machined bad? I dont have a lot of hrs on it and havent been hard on it at all. Always use a lower gear when needed and so on. It did it to me a couple times before but now its getting worse. I think Ill pull that top cover on the days off and look around a little. Maybe someone with more tractor time can school me on a few pionters on where to start. Ill keep everyone posted if I find something. Thanks

There is a detent and ball in the shifter parts under the lid.  I have heard of the retainer for the ball coming out of lace so the detent isn't positive enough.  I'd check that first.

ToneTone, I have not called Keno Tractors. Im waiting for a day off work to take a look at it first before I start calling. I might be able to look at it tomorrow. Im thinking Rich is right with the weak or broken detent spring or retainer. I will definitely post up what I find.

Sorry guys been really busy and haven't had a chance to really look at it. I will get to it this weekend hopefully. I took the lid off briefly and looked around and did not find anything out of the norm. I needed more tooling to take the rods out to look at the detent ball and spring so im going to have to tram it over to my shop and work on it there. I'll let you know.

Sorry Tone Tone……Its been a bit since ive been on the site and didn't even work on it until just recently. I took the ball and spring out for the detent and didn't see anything visually wrong with it but decided maybe the spring was a little weak. So I stretched it a bit and put it back together. Maybe not the best fix or at all but its not too hard to get to it if I have to repeat and put a new one in if it doesn't work. So far it hasn't popped out of gear yet on me but I've only used it for just a couple more pulls to finish my fence line that I had pretty much completed already. I'll let you know more as I use it and I'll try to post in more of a timely manner. roflmao

Ok….. so its been a while since I did this and had all this happen but I will finish what I started here. Even if it is a day late and a dollar short! So….I tried it out again with the spring stretched it out and I think it was a bit better but it still decided to pop out of gear on me Just ounce this time, but it still did it. So I took the cover back off. Then I punched the pins out that hold your shift fork to the shift rod. Pulled spring and detente ball again as well. Long story short I pulled the shift rods out and took a burr bit to the detentes and made them a little more prominent. wish I would have kept my pictures so I could have posted with pics but it was on my old phone and my old phone is a no longer. I still need to figure out how to post them on this forum too. I put it back together and I haven't done any long passes with the box blade yet to see if its truly fixed but I have done some pushing a bit and it hasn't popped out of gear yet. I think its good now.

well…..I'm sure you've done it by now ha ha ha. It went well for me. I am at 106 hours now and no problems. I just followed the book and did a little online research for the valve adjust. Its real veg on what mark to use on the balancer. So I turned it over by hand and felt rocker arms to find compression stroke and the exhaust stroke. As for the head bolts….most everyone said to loosen and re-torque. I dont remember what it is off hand, but If I remember right the specs are in the books. The only thing that I've come across that was changed my air filter(OEM), it want seating well enough at the gasket and it was sucking a little dirt. I checked it when I bought it from Keno and just checked the wing nut  and it was tight. Found this at the 100 hr oil change and maintenance. Hope it didnt effect the life of my engine too much. I cleaned the intake tube out and put a new filter in.
