Changing out the gear oil on Jinma 254, any suggestions on how to get those 3 small plugs on the center front axle and right and left housings. They have a small square stem protruding and nothing I have tried has worked
Thanks

When I first got the tractor I drained these, and it's well past time to do so again. As I recall I got the center and right one loose and had to drill and tap for another plug on the left side. I do remember them being a PITA though.

Any suggestions on where to drill and tap should that come to pass?

That was back in 2008 or 09, I'll have to look. I think we just drilled out the old one and chased the threads but I'll look when I get home.

I was able to get the drain plug on the left side wheel drive out. Tool of choice was female side of 1/4 in drive extension. The other 2 were previously stripped by me. My question is to drain the axle I raised the front end with the bucket and tipped the left/open side down. Got a lot of gear oil out I would say at least 2 gallons. Is this an inefficient but ok way to drain the axel?
Thanks

I have a 20 hp dong feng and a 50 hp foton each has 3 drain points to get all the oil out of the front axle and spindle housings ,but if your oil is not contaminated I would just get out most of it and refill . Do you have a oil level weep hole? If not I was told if there is a plug on the top of the axle housing look in there and fill till the axle itself is covered , and call it good. Back to the oil I said contaminated that would include excess metal shavings. If you are unsure about the oil needed use gl-4 rated gear oil it is safe for brass and copper bushings. Some gl-5 is made with a formula which uses chlorine and it eats yellow metals.

The oil looked ok, maybe a small amount of water, condensation?? No shavings, filled with napa 80/90 gear oil. The front axle does have a dip stick and used that to determine when full
