oil changes

   I usually change the oil and filter once a year.

Once a year is usually the best.  Most people don't put enough hours on their tractor in a year to do the hourly recommended change.  But fluids do break down over time, and can collect moisture.

I figure oil & filters are cheap-Engine expensive.

My book says 200 hours, but so does my IH 234, I do them both @ 100, works out to be once a year. both are in good shape, I got in the habit of visually monitoring oil appearance too. neither get ugly in that time. Dad was an aircraft mechanic in wwii. kinda raised us on the extreme side of maintenance. Oil & filters much cheaper than engines.

I use the old school method that 40 hours is equivalent to 2,000 miles.  Using this we see that changing at 100 hours would be the same as changing every 5,000 miles.  Works for me.

that's assuming only mowing and discing prob a lot less miles doing routine work

The part you missed was “equivalent to”.  The 40 hours to 2000 miles was used by many major equipment manufacturers for decades.  It does not mean that you are going to drive your tractor at 50mph.  It was used to establish a relationship for the customer between hours and miles.  I worked for Cat and John Deere and they both used it back in the old days.  That's why I called it the old school method.   If you want to really change oil when needed do analysis.

I change the oil at least once a year just to make sure it isn't absorbing moisture or getting acidic. Most years it's more often. I'll look at the oil, smell it, even rub it between my fingers. Not sure why I do that last one, but the combination tells me when I should change it.

I change oil and filter and completely service the tractor once a year. Sometimes I grease it between oil changes just because it may need it, mostly the FEL.

I change oil by analysis. It tells me how much fuel dilution I have, how much coolant contamination, if the oil has “broken down”, aluminum, brass, cast iron, steel, and TBN. I currently have about 300 hours on the engine oil and it is perfect.

For me its every 75 hours or yearly. It generally turns out to be a yearly oil change in the spring.

I also change every 100 hrs and grease in between. How many pumps of grease do you guys put into rear axle, right inside of the wheels?

The question actually should be: “When do you intend on changing the oil and when you actually remember it the next time and finally getting around to do it”. I start to think that it needs changing around 100 hours and sometimes it gets changed then. Sometimes as much as almost 150.
