My mount on the right axle broke in half at the lower bolts, can’t remember hitting anything hard enough to do it but must have at some point. trying to get the ball out of the cylinder end and giving it a few wacks has not had any success. Anyone know if there is a clip holding it in or do I just need the right ball joint separator? Picture of one (from another post) is attached. Theirs broke in a different spot.

          Paul,

If I read your post correctly, the plate attached to the front axle broke at the lower 2 bolt holes and you are having trouble removing it from the steering cylinder.  The ball does not come out of the cylinder end, its just a bolt secured with a castle nut.  I used a large C clamp on the castle nut to apply just enough pressure to remove the stud from the cylinder.  If I remember correctly its not a tapered shaft so it shouldn’t be to difficult to remove.

I broke the stud from the plate the first time, and the second time I broke the plate at the lower 2 holes.  I used a thicker plate (I think 1/2″) and welded the stud back on.  My trouble is driving over stump holes, or small logs that cause the wheels to turn further than they normally would creating stress on that plate.

Thanks for the help, thicker plate sounds like a good idea.

I remember that picture  I was maneuvering in close quarters by the rock garden and turned the wheel without realizing one of the tires was up against a boulder.

FWIW as I recall I didn’t remove anything, I brought my 110 Dan Mig out to the tractor and welded it back together on the spot.

Paul…..it looks like the same thing I have on my NT254…..you need a 2 armed gear puller to get that off….the nut has a cotter pin you need to remove and then there may or may not be a small bushing/spacer that needs to be removed…attach gear puller and you’ll have it off in a minute…once off clean old cached grease from the movable ‘metal oring’ inside that part of the steering cylinder and you will see a groove on the outside of the movable ‘oring’ and two access holes opposite each other in the groove….these allow grease to get to the interface of that ‘oring’ and the housing of that ‘oring’—hope this makes sense but my son and I just cleaned my PS cylinder and replaced seals and rubber O’rings….if you read my post in the ‘Mainrenence/Operation section you will see a link to actually replace all steals and O’rings…..good info to save…
