Has anyone had the disc brakes apart on a 284?
Mine are acting abnormally. Grabbing or not being effective. It is hit or miss when you step on the pedal as to what might happen. I don’t use them often, but it is kind of important they work when needed.
I have adjusted them as per the manual and did notice that one side gets firm with very little travel of the rod and the other side seems to have “rough spots” in the travel and it moves farther than the other side. However it will lock the wheel and the other side will not.
In looking at the parts diagram it would appear that there are two plates that are separated by balls. When the brakes are applied the plates rotate in opposite directions and the balls (riding on ramps?) force the plates apart and into the friction pads.
I am wondering if rust/corrosion inside the brake units could be the problem. Looks like removal of the floorboards will give access to the outer cover.
Once the outer cover is off does anyone know if the plates can all be removed from the end or do you need to take the whole assembly off?
Any advice would be appreciated

I am assuming that your tractor has dry brakes , if so take off the covers ,I think you will see two small shoes. They pivot one end and there is a cam on the other end that pushes the shoes onto the drum . I have a dong feng le 204a so I may be incorrect on what I am telling you. But mine the shaft that has the cam was dry and rusted as it went thru the housing so the brakes on that side did not work properly . took that shaft out used some emery paper on it lubed it lightly reassembled and it is good to go. Hopefully yours is similar.

According to my manual there were drum brakes like you describe but the ones on my tractor are disc brakes. A different configuration. I have never seen anything quite like this before and have only the images in the manual to go by. I won’t know for sure about the expander ball part of it until I get it apart. Drum brakes I understand, disc brakes on vehicles I understand, these, not so much….

Piper, have a picture of the 284 brakes, but can’t figure out how to post it for you.

Ah Ha!
This is pretty much what I had pictured in my mind based on the parts book drawings. This helps clear it up.
Based on the feel at the pedals I suspect there is rust/corrosion in the area where the balls contact the plates. Possibly a broken spring or two.
I am guessing there is no lube on any of the pivot points or the balls/ramps. I am guessing that some kind of lube would be a good idea for sliding metal parts.
What do you think would be best, a light coat of wheel bearing grease or a white grease like lubriplate?
Did you have to take the whole housing off to get these out or will they come out the end plate?
Thanks!

glad you were able to post the pictures of those brakes, never seen that before, interesting . When you decide to lube things up use hi – temp. lube.

Hi, the brake system on a 284 is a dry system-it sounds like the seal inside there might have gone bad allowing fluid into the Brake Housing. The best way to check this-there are bolts on the bottom of the break housing, if you take them out and fluid runs out then you are going to have to replace the ceramic discs and the inner seal.

Nope, already checked that. No fluid came out.
The feel on the pedal is more like the pressure plates are not rotating smoothly. I suspect rust or other corrosion on the plates or balls. Another possibility is a broken pressure plate spring.
I won’t know until I get it apart.

Hi Jeff,
This thread is 3 years old, I had to go back and review it to even remember what it was about. If I remember correctly I was able to fix mine by spraying some brake clean and then some lubrication onto the balls that sit between the steel discs. Once they started moving freely all I had to do was adjust free play and all was well.
Do you have disc brakes or drum brakes?
What kind of work are you doing to the brakes?

ordered new discs and i did get system working after I removed disc and presssure plates. no broken springs just a lot of rusted seized hinge points.
i am almost at limit for adjusting free play out so hence the reason i ordered new discs.
hopefully you will read this as i took a long time to reply
cheers
