I started leakimg PS fluid from my left hydraulic lifter.  Figured it an oil seal leak…easy fix.  WRONG!

Checked out my manual’s exploded view to see what it would entail to take apart retrieve ‘damaged/worn’ seal.

Drained fluid,  removed left hydraulic fork, removed oil seal, and large washer..

Was told to check the shaft to see if there was any movement which would indicate a bad bushing.  No such moveme t.  WHEW!!

Replaced the large washer (some may call this an ‘oil slinger’ which prevents the splashing of oil directly on the oil seal itself)  and NEW oil seal….well not the washer as Circle G said they were out of stock and didn’t know when they would be back in stock.

Reassembled all parts per diagram.  Replaced new oil/fluid.

Result: still leaking.  Frustrated.  Was told maybe I replaced seal in wrong direction.  Took all apart again and repeated above procedure with ANOTHER seal  ruined as you cannot take rhose seals out without boogering them up.  Same result…still leaking.  I hsve one oil seal left but don’t want to use it until i know is going on.  Wjat am I not seeing here?

NOTE: The Nortrac and Jimna 254 manuals are the same…

…AND cannot qeven find a Jimna parts place source.  Any help here?

          Please clarify:

By PS fluid do you mean hydraulic fluid?

What do you mean my left hydraulic lifter? Are you referring to a front end loader cylinder?

Or are you talking about the power steering hydraulic cylinder?

Where did you drain the fluid from?

What does the left hydraulic fork attach to?

I’m sure we can figure this out if we can define exactly what you are working on. Can you post a picture?

Jinma parts can be had at Affordable Tractors, Circle G Tractors and Keno Tractors, just to mention a few.

Sorry for the vagueness of my descriptions…. I will answer your questions in order…

First of all this problem of leakage is attached to the Hydraulic Power Lift right where it attaches to the Case  Part # 41.  When sitting on the tractor it is the left lift arm assembly…Part # 30.  The lift arm seems in good shape…no play or wobbling. It slides on the fluted or splined end of the shaft easily.

            Your questions:

Yes–I do mean hydraulic fluid.  I thought everything was hooked into the same reservoir/sump.  Not oil.

I am not referring to the FEL.  See above.

I am NOT referring to the power steering hydraulic cylinder.  I am aware where that is located. I have rebuilt one and replaced it new 2nd time.

I drain the fluid from just under the seat to the left…just above and to the left of the power take off.

The left hydraulic lift arm assembly (not fork…my mistake.) slides onto the fluted or splined shaft end and butts to the case and is secured with a couple of bolts through a cover plate.  The ‘oil slinger’ washer is inserted first followed by the oil seal with the oil seal inserted with visible springs and other openings sliding onto the shaft toward the inside of the case.  I think they butt up against the bushing.  Picture indicates it as I see it.

            I have pictures to send…

My biggest question is which order and which direction does the oil seal and washer go?  I cant’t make it out from the diagram.  Others have told me I must have inserted seal wrong.  So I took it apart agaid and turned everything opposite and still leaks.  Trying to figure it out…

normally the open side with the spring around the seal lips will go towards the oil side of the case , and I would say the washer would then go on then the lift arm. This is what I would assume.

I assume that you have felt the shaft and there are no edges or grooves that are tearing the seals. And I also assume that you are lubricating the seal and shaft before installing seal.

Is there a time frame to allow these seals to fully ‘seat’?  Should I expect leakeage for awhile or should leakage stop?

I am on vacation this week.  Will change next week  and then let you know.  Thanks

I do not believe that a wear in period is necessary , it should seal right from the beginning. unless maybe a heavy fibered grease was used to lube things up for fitting seal. but a short use should have the seal lips to shaft mated.
