I have a Nortrac NT-254 with the Y385 engine. Bought it new in 2008 and it has about 300 hours on it.

I went to start it a couple of weeks ago after it had been sitting for a few months. It started after cranking for a while, and when it did start it was smoky and then it sped up to a fairly high speed on its own and then settled down on its own to a normal idle. It remained smoky for a few minutes and then cleared out and ran normal.

Does that sound like an injector leaking while the engine is not running?

Not likely to be a leaking injector. When the engine is not running any leak would bleed off the pressure before it dumped very much fuel.

More likely is the extended cranking was dumping fuel into the cylinders, which was not being burned until the engine fired up. Once it started running it started burning off the extra fuel and it took it a little bit to use it up.

Once it was back to normal the RPM’s dropped back. This happens to my tractor and I usually set it to about 1000 RPM until it warms up. As it does I usually have to pull the throttle back a couple of times. Think of it as slowly turning off the choke on a gas engine as it warms up.

Have you checked and or changed the oil in the injection pump governor? It is fine to just use the same oil as you put in the crankcase and it only takes a few ounces. I change mine at every oil change of the engine because there is a little bit of diesel that leaks into the lower part of the IP and it dilutes the oil.

On some engines, the IP is lubed by the engine oil system, but I doubt it is on your tractor. Just something to keep in mind.

not to be a wise ass but you need to run it more, something you might want to look at is the fuel, I assume that it is cold where ever you are at and it might have a trace of water in the fuel that had frozen in the injector pump governor housing. Not saying that this happened but with equipment that is not used much , condensation can get into fuels, more so stuff not kept under cover. So as stated above check the oil in the injector, smell and feel it to see if there is diesel in it ,if there is a more than normal oil  scheduled change out might be a good idea. If equiped with a fuel sediment filter look at it to make sure there is no water in it.

Thanks for the replies. At the time it hadn’t been run , it was because I was laid up for a bit. Yes I do need to run it more, I agree to that.

So I guess not likely an injector leak. Good idea to check the oil in the injector pump. I’ll for sure do that. It’s kept inside a heated shop, so condensation is not as likely, but not impossible, so I will check for that as well.

              Thanks again
