has anyone taken a hoe bucket and narrowed it or welded on bucket ears? I would like to make a bucket 2 inches wider than the pins that hold the bucket on.I have a 24 inch bucket but for trenching it is to wide.I can get a used bucket the size I want but the ears are wrong so I will have to cut them off another bucket this seller has.this is for my jcb 214 these buckets are close to $1000.00 new .it is not chinese do not hate me for putting this on this forum, consider it as just a question. I have a 230 amp ac/dc stick welder and a 185 amp hobart handler mig.

I narrowed buckets and welded on ears, both. Neither one is particularly difficult or treacherous. For narrowing a bucket the MIG unit would be my choice, but for welding on the bucket ears I might go to the stick welder for increased penetration, especially on a used bucket with rust and scale. A 6011 rod will cut through rust and paint and dirt like it wasn't there and give a good deep penetration. If you take the time to do a really proper weld prep with grinding and v-ing the weldments, then the MIG unit could handle it using .035″ wire and 80/20 argon/CO2 mix. If yoiu have it, Dual-Shield wire is great for that sort of work, too.

Me too. I'm looking for a used mini-excavator bucket that I can cut down.

I bought an extra 12″ bucket for my LW-7 BH from Betst Power Equipment for digging around stumps back in march 2011 for around $200 with shipping. They had the best prices from all the places I looked. The replacement bucket was built 2 times as well as the Jinma 18″ factory that came with the BH. I have a post on it back in march 2011.

man oh man if I could buy a 12 to 15 inch bucket for $200.00, for my jcb 214 .I would not fool around with cuttung and welding thats for sure. And I would really like a smooth bucket for trenching and working in close areas around known objects.
