:wacko: When checking out my dozer today I found that the brake Pull rods are not adjusted as the book shows they should be. I tried to adjust as picture in book but rods are too short to match picture on figure 10a-1. I had a warranty guy come out and adjust the brakes a few months ago and it seems to turn fine but I’m concerned that I’m wearing my brakes down. Has anyone else with the nor track 35 XTD noticed that same problem ? If so what did you do? I know bob made a cable mod for this.

The steering brake/clutch application sequence has been an ongoing issue, and for some reason Yuchai (the manufacturer) refuses to address it. The current stock linkage configuration will work satisfactory only if there is a significant amount of pre-tensioning of the brake band, which causes the band to constantly drag against the brake drum, and as you correctly surmised, lead to premature failure of the brake band lining.

Thanks Bob. Tinkered around today reverse engineered the brake adjustments from the fully engaged position. No doubt the brakes are pre loaded. I adjusted out the pre load as much as the rods would allow and still keep the stroke as correct as possible. After all was done was pleasantly surprised that everything seems to work as it should. When first push on the pedal about 1/3 stroke steering clutch is released and Dozer turns slowly. When continuing stroke track stops and Dozer turns quickly. Is somewhat confusing to figure out because rods are in opposite position as owners manual but correct if you look in parts break down book. At least the book northern tool gave me with Dozer.

That’s why I re-engineered the linkage, to assure the brake band wasn’t pre-loaded and dragging. The added advantage of the cable and sheave configuration is the 2:1 ratio of clutch/brake sequence, and best of all is the little pedal effort required. Glad you got it sorted out though.
