I just replaced pump and started tractor.  It didn't sound great so I checked the timing. A fellow at Affordable told me it needed to be set at 16 BTDC.  Mine was around 20.

I did my best to spill time it just by removing the injector line from pump.  Definitely sounds better now at 16 but I cant drive the tractor as a bunch of stuff is still disconnected from splitting it in two for clutch pin.  And I cant run it long as it is in my basement.embarassed

Would like to get this right before I get everything back together…..hate to pull the radiator and fan out again.

What am I looking for at 16 BTDC?  The beginning of the swell of diesel from the pump or the END of the swell?  Thanks for any advice on this.

The plunger is operated by the camshaft in the fuel injection pump. When the meniscus (“swell”) is at it's highest point (flat) the plunger is at maximum stroke. Hope this answers your question. laugh

            Luke,

My understanding is that you turn the engine until the fuel just stops “spilling”, not until it starts spilling.  I think the idea is that you want to time for when all the fuel has been injected, not when it starts to get injected.

You can run the tractor for several minutes without doing harm.  You might want to try it out before putting on the radiator.

When you timed to 16 degrees, did you use a protractor or the mark on the front pulley?  Does anyone know if that mark on the front pulley is for pre EPA engines without centrifugal advance as well as those with centrifugal advance?  I'm wondering if the timing changed with the EPA engine and if so, did they change the pulley marks.

            /Jon
