Hello – I need some advice. my 20 hp tractor was running hot. when I checked the water level it was extremely low. I added coolant – restarted the tractor and the coolant is being forced out of the over fill tube. Checked the cap it's fine some how there is a great deal of pressure in the radiator .. Is it a blown head gasket… how much work is it to replace …. what other parts or gaskets should I order?

I would say that it is most likely a head gasket .if you can do a compression check to see which cylinders are involved, that will give you some insight what to look for when you look at the gasket.I guess just the head gasket ,I do not know if for the tractor (you did not say what kind)you have they suggest replacing the head bolts. But get the water out of those cylinders asap.

Head gasket replacement on the 2-cylinders is a fairly easy job, you may need some exhaust  and intake gaskets also

Hello – I'm back  – Thanks for every one's help – I'm new to this…  it's a northern tractor model 204…  from what I can tell the oil looks clean.  It's gotten a bit cold here in NY so have not been outside as I do have a day job and it's too dark out when I get home so the week end warrior will be addressing first thing Saturday

I'm back – anyone know how to get the head off engine – I stripped head – but it's like welded to block

Well, you probably don't have a machinist's wedge, so reinstall three head bolts, one in the center and one at each end. Leave about one-half inch gap between the head of the bolt and the cylinder head. Crank the engine over once or twice. Now I'm assuming you have the head completely stripped down, rocker shaft, push rods, injectors, and all.

if you have a engine crane go to several bolts with chain and lift it easy get some tension and maybe tap it with a good size brass hammer or I have used a slide hammer to loosen heads and other stuck parts

Bob  – Thanks so much – took all of about 30 seconds after spending a hour or two pulling my back out…..  have most of it back together.  some how I dropped a nut from intake manifold – need to order a few parts – oil filter and valve cover gasket – drain oil and anti-freeze .. I hope by the end of next weekend – I'm back in business for another 10 years
