        Hello all!

        Decompression lever

I have a 2007 model 354 with a Yangdon 4 cylinder, 35 hp diesel engine.  The operators manual I got was and is not helpful. There is a “decompression” lever located above the brake pedal. My question is what is it used for, how is it used, and when should it be used? I have a picture, it is the silver ¼’ rod.

        Thanks

          Len,

The idea of the compression lever is to open it during cold weather while cranking to allow the engine to turn around a few times to get the “fluids” moving to lubricate. Then you close it and… presto!… the engine starts!

Or at least that's the idea behind it. It doesn't allow compression to build up but allows the engine to crank. It is supposedly to “reduce wear and tear”. Personally, I very rarely mess with it. Only when the 284 has sat a long time.

          People are hilarious...
I'm supposed to choose and be in one of the 2 parties. And NEITHER is worth a damn!

            Jack:

I figured it was something like that. I live in Georgia and it does get cold here in the winter. It is in the 40s in the AM and the 70s later in the day at this time. My tractor  starts well ( a few seconds in the morning and as soon as you touch the key in the afternoon), but when it is real cold below 32, it cranks for 10-15-20 seconds.  I guess I try the decompression lever then.

            Thanks
