<p style=”text-align: right;”>Owners of the QDJ1331A Gear Reduction starters may want to remove their staters and inspect the Flywheel teeth for wear.My 3 year old reduction gear starter has ground 1/8” of steel from the corners of my flywheel teeth.
I compared an older standard starter to the newer gear reduction starter and the rebound bearing that the pinion gear slams into when starting is different.
The standard starter rebound bearing is less thick by 1/8” allowing for more flywheel gear engagement.</p>

can you chuck up that rebound bearing in a lathe and take off some for better engagement?? Or are you gonna have the old starter rebuilt? or is it to far gone?

Mr. Privett;
I just cut it off with a thin grinder cut-off blade.
I replaced it with a well greased leather washer sandwiched between two steel flat washers.
I calculated I increased my flywheel gear engagement by .250”.
The engine starts and sounds like I am getting better engagement but the starter pinion momentarily did not instantly disengage during one of the five engine starts. Time will tell.
Ps;That rebound bearing I cut off is held in place by a round wire C-Clip. You must first remove the cast iron starter housing from the pinion assembly.
The metal bearing just needs tapped off the C-Clip towards the pinion and then pry the C-Clip from the starter shaft.If I have to replace the flywheel ring gear why can’t I simply remove it from the flywheel and flip it over ?
What do you think?

some ring gears are not directional and can be flipped over and some not, as I look at the picture of the ring gear it looks to me that it is a directional ring gear,but it might be the angle the picture was taken at. I am wondering if the ring gear was made on the flywheel and non replaceable too. I had one that I had flipped and could not get it to fully lock on the flywheel had to tack weld in a few places, it was on a tractor and the potential unballanced condition I created by tack welding did not show up because of the low rpms there. anyway it might be good to look at a exploded view of the clutch flywheel assm. and see if it shows the ring gear as a seperate piece.

I got courious and looked at the y380 engine and the ring gear is replaceable and at circle g for 67 bucks plus shipping.

Affordable Tractor has it for $55 and I will purchase it because it is “affordable”.
But I plan on Not destroying the ring gear I am removing…..if possible.
Hopefully my starter modification will fix the problem if I caught it in time.

It could have been a fluke but when I heated the ring gear to take it off and turn it over and then heated it again it never quite shrank down enough and when you would engage the starter the ring gear would spin on the flywheel so just be aware this I guess can happen. At the price I would go new and maybe save the old one as a just in case.

I have used my tractor almost daily since this modification.
After my initial starter modification I remodeled it again by leaving only one washer on the pinion gear shaft of the reduction geared starter and removing the other washer and leather cushion.
That change seemed to give me a better ratio of flywheel gear engagements to failed engagements.
Now sometimes it engages instantly while sometimes it takes 4 tries.
But I hear no horrible teeth grinding as before.
Only other concern NOW will be that the unrestrained starter pinion slamming into that single 1/8” washer overtime time destroying it and maybe fracturing the cast iron nose of the starter.
I’ll let you know.
Ps,Check your starter engagement so this problem doesn’t affect your tractor.
