Just bought an oldie and the starter solenoid was shorted out. Bought new starter for $99 and it works but I just heard a noise and found the new solenoid hot as heck. I apparently used the gas cutoff to stop it but neglected to turn the key to center position. correcting that stopped the current to the solenoid. This can’t be as designed, surely? Is the key supposed to spring back after starting?

Yes, the start position should be only a “momentary on” switch and should spring back to the run position when released, just like your car does. If it is broke and the starter remains energized with the engine running you will damage the starter and related parts just as you have described. And probably worse.

Thanks for confirming that Piper, I will get that replaced right away. Probably why the original starter had a shorted solenoid.

It still starts so I hope I caught it in time.
