I need a keyway for my injection pump for a 395 engine. What size do I need? Thanks

If you have a fuel injection pump without a keyway I wouldn't attempt to cut a new one, just send it back and exchange it for one that has a keyway already cut. This is something that was obviously overlooked at the factory.

The injection pump came with a new keyway when I got it but I want to replace it because I have done some engine repairs.

Ok, I need help here. What are you calling a keyway?

              Is this really Tommy?

Why would you think that Tommy would post something like that, Bob?

Roger – a “keyway” is a longitudinal slot cut in a shaft for the purpose of retaining a piece of key stock to effect a positive coupling between the shaft an a pulley or wheel.  Keyways are cut into the shaft with a milling machine and are not a replaceable item – they are either there or they're not.  Replacing a keyway would be the same as replacing a hole.  You can't buy a keyway, you can only have one machined.  Your use of that term has us all confused.  Can you clarify what you mean by the term?

Yeah, I used the wrong terminology . I guess the proper terminology would be a woodruff key and if that is not correct then I need the cut piece of metal that goes in the keyway for my injection pump on the ty 395 engine. Sorry for the confusion.

Aha!  Yes, that would be called the key.  A Woodruff key is half-moon shaped and regular key is usually (though not always) square in cross section.  For a square key you can measure the width and depth of the keyway and determine the necessary size of key stock.  If a Woodruff key is used, the shaft will have a half-moon shaped slot milled in it instead of a straight, continuous slot.  In either case, the sheave, pulley or wheel that goes on the shaft will have a straight slot milled in it that is usually half as deep as it is wide.

Maybe it was Ronald. Been so long now I forgot. Had something to do with using a tire pressure gauge as a fuel pressure gauge. He led me down the garden path. roflmaoroflmaoroflmao

If it were me, I’d just take the old key to the local hardware store and match it up – they aren’t anything special, just metric (maybe).

But to answer your question, Yes. All key stock and corresponding keyways are standard sizes. There is a mathematical formula used to determine which size of key to select for a given size shaft and whether it is tapered or not. This task is usually burdened by the machine designer so you don't have to worry about it.
