2005 Jinma Tractor w/Y385 Engine.
What are the signs or impending signs of a Fuel Injector Pump failure. My Tractor turns over okay, but will not start. At time, it almost wants to start but does not. Fuel flow is good, and I have purged the fuel lines of air. one of my tries, the engine started, but quit after a few moments. Thanks, John

Well you have done the first troubleshoot by purging the system. There are lots of other things to check/do before jumping to a failed pump conclusion. Some questions:
What is your outside temperature?
Does your tractor usually start at that temp?
Do you use glow plugs? If so have you verified that they all are working?
Are you getting sufficient fuel flow at the injectors while cranking?
Are the filters plugged?
Are you sure there is no water in the system?
When the engine fails to start is is there any smoke from the exhaust?
What color?
If you give a whiff of starting fluid into the air cleaner while cranking, what happens?
There are all kinds of things that could be causing a no start, from plugged or leaking injectors to low compression to the pump getting out of time to a bad pump drive system.
One thing that seems fairly common is the fuel cut0ff rack getting stuck in the off position. This would prevent any fuel from going to the injectors no matter how much flows into the pump.
Check these things out and post more details about what is going on when you try to start it and we can go from there.

you say you purged the air from the lines are you saying that this was done at the injectors? Just in case you do not know some of these tractors have filter screens in the banjo fittings in various locations (but usually at the inlet of the pump) I would check the oil level in the pump also. You might want to pull off a sample of fuel in a glass jar and make sure there is no water

did you ever get this fixed?

Thank you for the follow-up. I rechecked all filters and replaced the fuel strainer, cleaned out the fuel tank, and refilled it with fresh fuel. I found two out of three glow plugs were bad (bench checked) so replaced all three. I thought that would do the trick, but the darn tractor still did not start. I ordered three new fuel injectors to try next. After that, I may focus on the injector pump itself, especially after a fuel cut-off could also be a cause. I did try starting fluid sprayed into the air filter, but that only made an internal racket in the engine, but did not start. At various times, the exhaust from the stack was white. On another note, I did replace the governor oil, too. My Jinma 284 has performed well for me since 2005, with normal expected maintenance requirements; however, I got a good deal on a Yangdong Y385T fuel that will be the next project if the new injectors do not pan out. I will keep you filled in on my progress as time goes on. Thank you again for the follow-up.
Regards, John

With good care I would not think this would be a problem with normal amount of hours on the engine one would put on but , maybe you should do a compression check just to remove it from the possible list.
