I have lost the 4×4 on my Jinma 284. Have removed the sleeve for the front drive shaft and discovered that the front splines on the shaft are not engaging. It seems as though what ever is supposed to hold the shaft forward is not doing so. What should I be looking for?  Has anyone else had this problem?  Thanks, dave

The front drive shaft is coupled to the transfer case by six balls that engage the splines.   They are held in place by a snap ring that is known to break, letting the balls loose.  When you drop the drive shaft, the balls fall on the ground and you lose them.  frown

If the balls aren't lost, just put them in place with some heavy grease and replace the snap ring and you should be good to go.  If you lost the balls, I believe they're either 6mm or 8mm diameter – measure the grooves to check and get new ones or use short sections of the appropriate diameter grade 10.3 metric bolt shaft just long enough to fit.

Check the diagram in the parts manual and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Rich is correct ,the ball bearings are 8mm. Pay close attention to the shaft also if it's worn the balls will not stay in place for any length of time. The rear coupler has a spring, compress that spring and you can remove the shaft. We keep all the replacement parts in stock.

Thanks for the confirmation Tommy – as the years roll by I get less and less sure of a memory I could formerly have depended on for nearly total recall of most anything I'd ever read.  I think I may have overloaded my memory card or something. roflmao

I could use some help from you all again.  I have a 284 with the same problem.  It worked a couple of days ago and the next day I almost got stuck several times brush hogging.  I checked the bearings you were talking about….on the rear part of the drive shaft where it goes into the trans and they are still there.  If you attempt to turn the drive shaft by hand it seems to be engaged. The shift lever seems much easier to move now and I took off both shifter plates on the top of the trans and drained the oil out—-everything that I can see in there looks ok—no broken gears however where the shift lever engages the gears is very hard to see.  I picked the front end up with the bucket and the front wheels spin freely.  Should I be tearing the front dif. apart next?  any ideas?????

Sounds like you need to remove the 4 x 4 driveshaft, then check the front differential, the shaft has a coupler on each end, 6- ball bearings on each end,so it could be one of those parts bad or a gear in the front 4 x 4 box.Start with removing the shaft

                          Hi Tommy,

The new shaft arrived today, I just have a couple questions, who is running around there with no shirt on?  Is his wife mad and should I send them back?  Anyway, nice packing job!  I didnt look to close at the coupler, guess I should order one to be safe, im gonna get a new star washer too, I want to do it right the first time.

Please thank the bare back guy in the warehouse for me,

                          dave

Hey bgmackey, sounds like we definately have the same issue, I have removed my front shaft on Tommies advice and found the issue, see above,  its gonna be an easy fix.  Buy the way, make sure you put some jackstands under your front axle or loader frame, safety first!  (27 year veteran Fire Rescue Lieutenant speaking)

The weather in Texas is 109 degrees, our guys are only wearing Boxers now,all the other clothes are being used for packing (LOL)

Just kidding the local thrift store gives us the cotton clothes for shop rags by the bag full, so we started packing with them.We now have customers that ask about certian size T-Shirts, ect. Its very funny.

I found the bearings on the rear drive shaft (as they fell out) but haven't had much time to do any further inspections.  I couldn't even see how they would go back in honestly.  Hopefully I'll be able to call Tommy on Tuesday and order what I need.  Maybe both front and rear are gone. In either case does anyone have the parts break down of how it gets reassembled?

Waiting on my new couplers to arrive, then I will reassemble.  Taking them a little longer than the shaft did, but thats OK.  I will let you all know how I make out.
