Four wheel drive will not engage. Took it out of 4 wheel drive a couple of months ago. Made multiple attempts to engage 4 wheel drive over the past months; the tractor did the job with 2 wheel drive. Drove the machine a distance of about 90′ in snow and got stuck with 2 wheel drive. Working on getting it back into the barn by shoveling 34″ of snow. The tractor is useless in snow with two wheel drive.

        Advice to diagnose and repair?

        2006 Jinma 354.

a lot of these Chinese tractor use a single split pin on the lever that engages and disengages the 4 wheel drive and they are prone to breakage . That would be a good place to start, make sure that the shaft that the lever hooks to moves, if you pull the lever off you could try something like visegrips to make sure it engages and disengages. There might be a spring and ball used as a positioner on the lever do not lose those. Some people have used a pin in a pin to strengthen the pin set up.

Thank you. I will take a look at that as soon as I can. Got the tractor back into the barn after a couple of days of slipping and sliding in 2wd, backing up 90′ into the barn. Started to remove the cover plate in the field, but discovered that the floor of the tractor is also attached. Did not see the bolt that secures the metal grid, because of the snow and ice. The tractor will be out of use until I can get 4wd working. Right now, we are dealing with the aftermath of a 38″ snowfall. Keeping me busy digging out and taking care of our farm animals without a tractor.

Okay. I pulled the plate with the release fork assembly. See photos below. Although I do not see anything obviously wrong, the fork will not slide back and forth laterally, seems to be jammed. I removed the lever and the shaft release fork head to free up the fork, but it does not move.

The diagram that came with the tractor is not exactly the same in that it has two pins to position the plate rather than a clip. The lever has a roll pin.

Will look more closely to see why the fork seems to be jammed.

I would check your front driveline.  That is a common problem with these tractors.   It has a metal cover over the driveline.  Take that off.  Inspect the driveline.

A lot of times, there are metal ball bearings that fall out and allow the driveline to freely rotate without turning front axle.

There are also couplers in there that sometimes fail.  I do have kits to repair the driveline.  Feel free to get ahold of me if you need anything.

I have yet to get beyond the front drive fork release assembly. Looks like the steel ball and locking spring are missing. Because they are missing I do not know what holds them in. Do you have the parts (ball bearing GB T308-1989, and spring 160.37.148)? The parts are listed in my parts listing that came with the tractor. See photos.

Thanks. I will take a look at the front driveline. Will the driveline rotate even if the 4wd lever will not engage?

I would take it out to avoid any possible damage from loose parts bouncing around in that tube. If your is like the tractors I have, collapsing the tube is easy if it has not been bent out of round. You should be able to get a quick look. I think most have had the problems with the front connection balls falling out.

Took a look at the front axle connection for my Jinma 354 front wheel drive. Does not look right to me, but do not know how it is supposed to look. Advice? Here are a couple of views:

I can get those parts.  Feel free to give me a call and order.
