I have a JM 284 and have a chance to borrow a JW03 backhoe frame mount model. The hoe has been attached to a JM 385. Can it mount to the 284 or does it require different mounting hardware?

I have a JW3 mounted on my 284. Works well after I tore the valve body apart and replaced seals that were defective from factory.
Probably Tommy at Affordable or Eric at Keno can tell you if the frame is the same.

Jackpine, what was the problem that led to you tearing the valve body apart?
My JW03 foamed incessantly when I got it, eventually dumping all the fluid on the ground. I was guessing (or am afraid) it was a leak in the low pressure end.. probably those seals in the valve body you mentioned. I am wondering if you could verify what your problem was, as that's what I am planning on doing as a fix.
I haven't been in a hurry to fix it, as I have a Case 590 for hoe duties… the 03 just came with the 454 when I purchased the auction.
Or if anyone else is familiar with the foaming problem, would love to hear about it!
thanks!

The frames are the same, the mounting hardware is different so you cannot use a frame mount on a tractor that was not set up already with the backhoe mounts, the front mounts are on the rear loader brackets

Hymay,
The control valve is on the high pressure side of the hydraulic pump, won't affect the low pressure as it returns to the sump. If you're getting foaming you have a leak on the intake side of the hydraulic pump, somewhere between the sump and the pump.

Hymay,
How full are you keeping the hydraulic fluid in the tank?
The fluid return port from the valve is mounted pretty high on the tank.

Rich, Thanks! that kinda blows the theory I had out the window. Good thing, I was rather avoiding the idea of taking that whole thing apart. I'm going to be heading up to the property tomorrow, and was planning to tinker and move things around a bit, I'll check between the sump n pump for anything loose.
RonJ, I think the last time I moved it around,(2+ yrs ago) it was probably everywhere from quite full, down to half full. It's effetively brand new, even though its several years old now. Never dug a single bucketful. I filled it from dry, and basically just moved all the cylinders around. Eventually it heated up and blew a ton of oil out. (if I recall corretly anyway). I think I assumed It was overfilled… so I let it cool, then did it all again. Pretty sure I dumped 3-5 gallons or more on the ground, got pretty frustrated, and parked it. Its not a small leak when it blows out, it dumps a large portion out and makes a helluva mess. Stuck it a ways down on the to do list .
I read a thread somewhere that was recommending keeping the level below the end of the tube for foaming issues… figured I might try it again tomorrow and see what happens

Hymay,
Here is a drawing of the tank on my JW03. You may want to check it against yours to see if we have the same tank.

My tank is quite a bit different than the one pictured above. I'll try to get measurments next time I am up there. But I do have an old pic from when I first bought it.
Is is possible that my 454 is too powerful for the JW-03? I think I ran across a seller who had JW-03's listed for 18-25hp, and JW-04's listed for 30-45's?

Hymay,
Where did it dump all of this oil from?
Mine is a JW03 frame mount and I didn't realize that the 3pt mount BH looked so different.
I don't believe that the size of the tractor makes any difference. The backhoe is driven by the hydraulic pump that hooks on the PTO. If that pump is the proper size for the backhoe needs, it should be fine.

It all comes out of the fill cap. The cap has holes out the sides, it can manage everything from dribbling out to a pretty good arc.
The current pump is what it came with out of the crate I assume. I am looking at swapping it out for a PTO shaft driven one.. so it can be used on non Jinmas.

RonJ is correct, tractor size doesn't really matter. However, because larger tractors will have category ll hitches, the pins will be larger and mods will have to be made to the hoe in order to fit. The back hoe's power is determined (limited) by the relief valve setting.

Hymay,
Yes, I see that you have the pump that is driven off the PTO Auxiliary shaft rather than the PTO shaft. Personally I prefer that type of pump. It is directly driven by a shaft that is controlled by engine speed alone. But mainly there are only 4 bolts to mess with when connecting/disconnecting. There are no chains, etc to prevent the pump from spinning.
I would be interested in pictures or a sketch of the hydraulic holding tank since I haven’t seen one like that before.
In the meantime, let’s keep going. Here is a picture of the control valve on my JW03. Is yours the same?

The control valve looks pretty similar, at least to my untrained eye.
It was getting dark when I finally got finished talking to the logger, so I'll have to get those tank dimensions on another run.
Is it possible for the hoe to move if the lines on the hyd pump were backwards? I can't say I have the utmost confidence in the assembler. Otherwise, my only guess would be the swivel connection on the back of the pump.

They look the same to me. In my picture, the lower left inlet pipe is labeled as Hyd Inlet. Trace the hose that feeds that fitting to assure that it goes to the output side of the pump.
