I was using my loader to plow snow. About 3 hours into it I lost power steering. Mechanical steering works fine. If I raise the front wheels with the loader, I can easily turn the wheels in both directions. I continued to use the tractor for about another hour. It seemed to me that the power steering was working intermittently, but I'm not definitely sure it was working. This happened once before during the summer, but resolved itself after about five minutes. There is no hydraulic fluid leaking and the loader has normal power. My tractor is similar in design to a Jinma 254. What are the steps to isolate the problem? Due to my work schedule I may not be able to start trouble shooting for 1 to 2 weeks, but I'd like to know where to start.

You need to start with what model tractor you have ? This will help with how to try and resolve your problem

Hi Tommy,
The tractor is a Luzhong TC254. I don't think there are many Luzhong tractors sold in this country, but is seems to be very similar to the Jinma.

I want to clarify something from my original post. There is no mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the wheels. Since I am still able to steer, I assume the steering pump referred to as a “hydraulic steering wheel assembly” in parts diagram is functioning properly. In addition the steering cylinder must also be working properly. If my assumptions are correct, does this mean the priority valve (called the “one-way stable distributing valve” in the parts diagram) is defective? Am I on the right track? I'll try to scan and post the exploded parts diagram later today.

From your clarification, if you are sure the hydraulic tank is at or near the proper level, I'd be looking at the priority valve as a likely source of your problem. Could be sticking, could be plugging up, could be foaming fluid.

Thanks for the reply. I'll try topping off the hydraulic tank. If if were low or foaming fluid, wouldn't I have loss of power to the loader as they run off the same pump? Below is the exploded parts diagram.

I had a ford that in winter the power steering would not work until the fluid warmed up.I used universal tractor fluid because it was thicker and did not run out all the small leaks it had. but it had that issue in the winter.the loader I would think has larger ports letting the thicker fluid pass. but trash in the valve would restrict it giving the same symptom.

I'll try replacing the hydraulic fluid. I've been meaning to do it soon anyway.

Most of the time when the PS works as you described on the Jinma 254's it is a torn seal in the Power steering cylinder itself allowing the fluid to by pass causing you to make many turns of the steering wheel before the wheels will turn. You may want to pull the shaft out of the PS cylinder and check them as well.
