The end of my Foton air filter has a plastic cup device the diameter of the filter, that the filter sits in with bits sticking out that make it look like a turbine blade. Fact is, I am intrigued. I have searched the ‘net but cannot find an answer of what it does. Surely one of our members must know. The photo is not my filter but a similar one. What does the plastic bit do?

        Regards Phil.

Your picture didn’t go through, you may need to shrink it to something under 1000 kb

I believe that what you are referring to I have no name for but what I think it does is to cause the intake air to swirl and the dust be separated out then sent out the (lack of a better name) pooter  valve which is that rubber  valve on the lowest part of the air cleaner. The vacuum of the engine pulses that valve to work and shed the dirt. I THINK

That’s a design that was made by Donaldson many yeas ago. The same design is also used on air filter pre-cleaners. They were originally called “Donaclone” filters. I have one on my skid steer and dozer, and they are both equipped with an automatic dust ejector “pooter”, which extends the filter life.

The incoming air creates a toroidal (centrifugal force) effect, throwing the heavy dust particles against the housing.

Thanks for your answers Bob, David, Tinbender.  Also the link. I thought it was some kind of debris trap but debris can’t get in the pipe because it has a gauze end. Not sure why the photo didn’t load.   Phil
