Jinma 284 I tried to disengage the PTO and nothing happends. The PTO lever springs back to the “DIE” position after pushing to the “EN”position. Clutch disengaged PTO disengaged. Any ideas?

Pardon the confusion but I take it that your PTO is running all the time unless you step on the clutch?
The PTO lever can be pushed down into the Engage position but it springs back up to the DisEngage position on its own and the PTO keeps running?
If the above is correct there are only a couple of possibilities.
The lever is loose from the shaft (broken roll pin?)
The shaft is loose from the fork inside
The fork is bent or broken
Do you have a parts diagram?

yes the PTO runs all the time except when I step on the clutch. I don’t think it is the roll pin, I can feel the shaft rotating. Why would it spring back from EN to DIE? Yes I have a parts diagram

is there a 3 point implement connected to the 3 point? I think a lot of these tractors the pto will spin due to the flow of oil. so put something on it and have the pto disengaged and then see if it spins, then you will know for sure if there is a problem.

I have a chipper installed

The chipper has a lot of mass that will continue to “push” the PTO until it slows down. Mine will run for a couple of minutes (at least) after it is disengaged.
If you start the tractor and release the clutch will it spin up the chipper?
There is no fluid connection anywhere that I am aware of.
The two stage clutches can be troublesome but the PTO shaft should not turn if the lever is in Disengage.
With the tractor stopped and the lever in Disengage, can you rotate the PTO shaft by hand?
Do you have the two speed PTO?
What year is the tractor?

The PTO lever and other parts are on page 30 (Drive Gearbox III) in my parts book. Pretty simple. The lever has a roll pin connecting it to the fork shaft which then slides the fork back and forth. There is a de-tent assembly on the lever where it connects to the shaft just before it goes into the housing.
If the spring or de-tent mechanism is messed up that might explain why it returns to the up position.
I would start by having a really close look at the lever to shaft connection. A bent or partially sheared roll pin could cause this condition. Punch the roll pin out to disassemble the lever and de-tent from the shaft. Once removed if you don’t see anything obvious you can check the operation by turning the shaft without the de-tent assy to see if that will disengage the PTO.
Let us know what you find.

with the tractor OFF put the pto lever in the engaged position either speed is ok ,then go and try turning the pto shaft, if it does not turn that is good. then put the pto lever in the disengaged position and then the pto shaft should spin freely. I guess you should try it in each pto speed on second thought just to be sure. And there is no direct connection as far a fluid goes it is just from the current flow of the hydros for the 3 point that causes this. usually mine as the fluid heats up and thins this pto rotation goes away or slows a lot.

I have a Rhino International 344 and the PTO will not engage. Bought it this way. It supposedly has a two stage clutch. I set my PTO speed control in either speed and engage the right hand side PTO lever, nothing. With the tractor off PTO engaged clutch out the shaft spins free in both speeds. I assume it is a yoke linkage problem in the transmission, below the cast steel hydraulic tank, below the seat. So I cannot find a shop manual anywhere but if I drain the Hyd.tank disconnect the inlet and outlet tube, lift it with a hoist what can I expect to still be hooked up to the tank? If I can finally get to the linkage, fix it, how much of a magic act is it to get back together, is it open on the bottom of the Hyd box to the top of the transmission? How much trouble is there to bleed the Hyd. system and get itall working again? Thank you anybody that has been to the belly of beast the and lived to tell the story.

before you get to carried away check the lever on the pto for damaged or sheared roll pins. and as far as I know all the hydro systems are self priming , it might take a min. or two. , but the pto is not powered by the hydros it s power comes at the first let off of the clutch pedal to get what ever spinning before the tractor gets power to the wheels.
