February 23, 2011 at 5:05 pm #30168Grizz,
That's part of Bluenoser's mod he did awhile back. He installed longer cylinders so he could get more depth of cut. Did a nice job too. He can tell you about it better than I can though.
While copying valuable material which has been designated as short term and then throw away, comma, I came across the above, which had missed my notice “back when”.================The depth of cut is WAY shallow on my Yuchai as well: Bluenoser put on “connector extenders” effectively lowereing his cut by about (I would guess) 3 inches.I'd thought about cutting a .5 thick steel plate to the right width (it's 6″ wide..”)and bolting it to the current blade,, I've got an oxy/acet. cutter, and a drill:but I could not make what Bluenoser did. Figger I'd have it cut another 1 1/2 inches..would this work, or would it fail quickly?Mostly I move sand and soil: no serious rocks.thx -

That should work. Is the cutting edge bolted on? Maybe it would be easier to remove the OEM blade and make a new wider one and bolt it back in place? Check around and see if there are old grader blades. If you are moving soft soil that might work.

If you stop to think about it for a minute, 3″ x 5' is a lot of material and that amount is cubed every 12″ or so. The blade loads quickly which also gives down pressure, so you've got a lot going on in a short period of time. And if you're doing a nice finish grade then you're going slow and real busy on the hydraulics.

Good point, will she push it? that is a lot of extra weight. The other thing I noticed, when I had the root rake on (teeth are about 8- 9″ – penetrating depth) is if you are on uneven ground you do not get yourself in a position where you get hung up and have dificulty truning or backing out. I found this out when working clearing the old orchard and building roads in the wioods. The extra blade length will limit your mobility if things are not relatively flat.

I forgot about the root rake and manouvering, good points to remember. I would not add an oversized cutting edge. If your goal is to move larger amounts of material with a minimum amount of roll-out then I suggest you do a “U” mod to your blade instead. This can be accomplished using only 3/16″ AR-400 steel plate, and you will be much happier with it.

He installed longer blade lift cylinders. Pics are in the old forums.

That's where i saw them, and my recollection is that the attachment hangers on the ends of the cylinders had been lengthened. i'll look again

Nope. Nice try Hal but it's the wrong end of the dozer. That thread is about my TPH mod where I did away with the tractor's hydraulics and installed my own.
Somewhere there is a thread by Bluenoser about his transom mod and longer cylinders.
But sisnce the OP may no longer be interested, I'd say we're
