On my 2006 foton ft504a the tachometer , hour meter quit working , it has been intermittent for the last few weeks. everything else works. what should I see with a ohm meter looking towards the pick up?(running or not running) I assume that one of the two prongs on the plug will be ground. I took the gauge cluster apart and two brass half moon shaped pieces fell out. Could not tell where they came from ,the board has no burned places that I could see. It is all micro circuits so nothing that I could fix like a open wire dangling. So I would like to be able to test the pick up so I know if I need to order one also. Thanks Dave

Just the fact that two pieces of brass fell out doesn’t bode well for the cluster. Anyway, you probably won’t get any reading from the pickup just sitting on the bench. Here is some guidelines that might help you.

thanks Bob it makes sense it would be a A/C generator I was shocked (no pun) to see the voltage amounts it makes. It shows the gauges being in place while testing I will try without hopefully I will see something without the gauge load.

Note that one of the leads from the mag pickup will go to a ground on the back of the tach. You will need to use that for your meter. Should be the white one.

the pick up was pulsing a/c current so I ordered a new gauge cluster from Asian Tractor Parts they are in Ontario Can. ($230.00 plus shipping) It is the first time I have used them ,so we shall see how it goes they were less expensive by 150 bucks from whoever sundown eq. found had the part ($381.25) plus shipping OUCH the difference buys a lot of beer, YEA!

Just curious if there was any correlation to rpm on your meter. What scale did you use?

I had the meter on auto adjust and for it to read to hundredths of a A/C volt . And the voltage did increase as the rpm went up BUT the voltage I read was about 3/4 of a volt on the bottom end and 1-1/4 on the top end BUT I suspect that might be normal as I was reading right off the pick up plug.

It would be interesting to compare your readings to a new mag pickup unit. The spec sheet I posted wasn’t for your mag pickup, just for a reference only. It’s possible your readings could be correct for your unit, and your readings could be different if you were connected to the tach. Another thing is that the signal could be stronger (voltage higher) if the pickup was closer to the flywheel (1/4, 1/2 turns out). Hope you check it again when you get the new tach. Good luck.

yeah all this guessing, it sure would be nice if the Chinese would come up with a well translated shop manual, it is a good thing these are as simple as they are, to keep the guessing to a minimum.

well believe it or not with parts falling out of the old cluster a new gauge set tach still does not work will get new part# 300.48.074 engine speed sensor next. does anyone have one laying around?

Got in a new pick up , when I parked the tractor tach was not working ( it was 40 ish outside), started up tractor to put in barn to replace sensor,( like 19) tach worked ,shut off tractor ,then restarted tractor tach worked , put in barn shut off then thought try a restart, tach no work put in new pick up tach has worked since. and yes I have tried to find a high resistance joint in harness with no luck. Damn strange we shall see

Sounds like a bad pigtail, or just plain bad pickup that could be temperature sensitive.

I guess it was the pick up, started and stopped many times today and all worked well , it seems that the hour meter in the new gauge cluster works better than the old one. It will advance time at a idle while the old one needed more rpm to advance the clock, but who knows, it has been strange since new. reminds me of a texas instrument calculator I had at time that would mess up rarely , so it took forever to figure out why balancing the check book I keep getting infrequent errors.

well it has been a little bit since I was having issues with the tach and all is still working well , so I guess that all the guessing it was the pick up .

That’s good news, David.
