This months long snow has the big cats coming into civilization looking for food. ODFW shot 5 of them around the city of LaPine south of here, and yesterday morning I found twenty to thirty of these tracks in the pathways I had dug with the snow shovel:

Yep. Notice the paw print is bigger than my Snow Boot print, Yikes! Standing out there alone with not even a shovel for protection looking at these things all over the place I suddenly had a guttural feeling of fear come over me, a rush I really don’t need, I mean it’s good to know it’s there and it’s a feeling I’ve never experienced in my life. The closest thing I would compare it to was when I was around 18 and walked across a wooden truss lumber flume for a mile at around 200 feet in the air, and even it wasn’t quite the same.

I’d keep that Desert Eagle on my hip if I was walking around there. Trouble is they are great stalkers and probably looking for a chicken dinner.

We’ve had a couple of cougars frequent our place from time to time. I always have my 357 with me just in case. These have been ambushers not stalkers. I’ve seen claw marks on trees where they climbed up to limbs to pounce on deer. Don’t know how they react when food is scarce, that could really change they’re attitude. They’re big animals, have seen them jump a good 30′ horizotally. They seem to stay away from me so far.

I’m going to have to borrow one from a friend, I have rifles and a shotgun, and an interesting Springfield 22/410 over under that folds in half, suppose I could use that. Or maybe I should just get one. At one point I just had this feeling I was being watched, the hair stood up on the back of my neck, that was weird.

You had the feeling you were being watched because you probably were. Something was salivating over you and pondering “ketchup or mustard”?

Taurus Judge is a useful tool for working where wild things roam

That over under you have is a m-6 scout I got one with the 22 cal. being 22 hornet instead of 22 lr. They got .410 slugs that would do some damage but you only got 1 shot. I know that  some .410 will chamber 45 colt. I think a revolver at .357 or larger bore would be your best bet.

My wife has those feellings and she’s usually right. She won’t mow back by the corner of the woods and our farm field because she feels like she’s being watched. I carry a 357 EAA revolver. A revolver never misfires. If you look around you can find the EAA Windicator 357 on sale for around $250. It may be cheap priced for a 357, but it’s actually well made and very accurate if you’ve got a smooth pull and steady hand. I popped a racoon on dead run at 30 yards with it.

The Judge is the way to go imho, and is on my wish list. You can alt load a slug, ØØ Buck, and a .45 Colt in a 2-1/2″ six round chamber. I like the mix-n’-match idea.

The gf has one of these (handed down from her Dad). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marble_Game_Getter

The versatility of cartridge selection is the greatest part of the Judge. .410 shot shells with anything from #9 shot to 000 Buck or slugs. Couple that with a good .45 LC with a quality HP bullet and you have just about any situation covered.

The biggest drawback is with only 5 shots you can’t load one of everything. 😉

A 2-1/1″ .410 will hold 3 000 Buck shot. So one snake load (#9 or #7 shot) two 00 Buck and two .45 LC with XTP hollow points will cover a wide range of threats.

The Judge also comes in a 3″ chamber and that increases the pellet count of ooo Buck to 5.

The 2-1/2″ version is way easier to control and shoot than the Super Blackhawk. Both are a lot of FUN.

I wish mine was a 3″. Hmm, maybe I have room “for one more”. 🙂

Rural life where you can use a tractor or dozer to push up a backstop for target practice is a great life!
