I have a JM 284. I had a problem with my 4×4 engagement. I corrected the problem. However when I opened the gearbox for the 4×4 engagement I found brown sludge. I found 2 drain plugs and replaced it with fresh 80/90 gear oil. One plug was in front of the box above the front drive shaft the other was below the 4×4 engaement lever. Behind this box is another gearbox where my gear shifter goes into and I noticed a dip stick to check the oil level which was also sludgy and low. My questions are as follows. Do the 2 gearboxes flow into each other because when I filled the 4×4 box it seamed to have no affect on the dipstick. And if they are seperate then where are the drain plugs for the main transmission and what type of oil should I be using. I know I have been negligent in changing the fluids which are original and I have had the tractor almost 7 years. I'm bad. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure but the one with the dipstick might be your hydraulics which is aw-32. you should still be able to tell the difference between aw-32 and hypoid 90,aw-32 is much lighter in weight.and yes you are baaaddd.but hopefully someone else will chime in who is more familar with that tractor.

Zen, here are a couple of pictures of my 284.
First picture – there are actually 4 drain plugs for the transmission/rear end. While you are laying under the tractor, I suggest that you also clean out the bell housing Weep Hole.
Second picture is the drain plug for the hydraulic sump. I only tried draining it once from there because of the mess that was made. I usually draw it out through the hole with the dipstick. It takes a lot longer, but I hate cleaning up messes.
