This may sound wierd, but I have a FarmPro 2425 tractor. When I try to start it in the morning on a warm day &5 degrees), it cranks and cranks for 15 to 20 seconds before it starts. Smokes abit though. Once it's warm it has no problems starting.
So now before I even begin to crank it over, I activate the glow plugs and it starts right up. My other tractor Rural King with the same motor does not need to do this. It starts right up.
Any advise would greatly be appreciated.

the only thing that makes sense to me is that you need to do a compression test ,and since you have two engines you have a good reference point. what I am thinking that your are not compressing enough to make heat to light it off until you preheat the cylinders. If this is right it would be really tuff in winter to get it to go. I assume that you have looked at the fuel and filters and screens all is good and clean.

before you do a compression test check your valve lash and if you have a compression release make sure it is fully disengaged. just another thought

I HAVE A FEW WINTERS ON MY 2425 ,
AND MINE ONLY STARTS IN WARM WEATHER AS WELL.
I JUST PULL THE AIR INTAKE OFF AND STICK A HAIR DRYER OR A HEAT GUN IN WHILE I GLOW IT FOR 60 SECS……
YES 60 SECONDS.TO KEEP THE INTAKE HOSE FROM FALLING OFF I USE A 6″ LENGTH OF DUCT TAPE….
YES DUCT TAPE.I LEAVE IT OUTSIDE …
LAST WINTER I HAD TO POKE A STICK AROUND TO FIND IT IN A DRIFT..
BUT THIS METHOD GETS HER GOING…
I ALSO HEAT THE STARTER UP AS THE BRUSHES STICK AND
THEY SWEAT WATER IN AND FREEZE.
I think Injector timing might help as the farmpros may have been set up different. I would need help from this forum on that issue

The hair dryer on a very cold day is a good idea, although I would not recommend holding the glow plugs for this long, that will melt them off inside the cylinder. Pump timing adjustment may make it easier to start in the warm weather. Another awesome upgrade to these tractors is installing a aftermarket switch to the glow plugs, the stock wiring only puts out around 10 volts when they should have 12 volts. I do have a kit with instructions if you would like to purchase this upgrade, or you can do it yourself very easily. Also, smoking when are cold is normal as it is with any mechanically injected diesel engine. Any questions feel free to give me a call!
