          Hi John, welcome.

If your indicator light isn't coming on there is no field current available. Check all of your fuses, wiring and ground connections. It's possible that your regulator is toast. Does the little indicator light on the regulator come on? What kind of voltage reading do you get at the battery after starting the engine?

You are going to need a multi meter or know someone that has one to test the output on the alt.,or you an remove it and have it checked at the auto parts store.

I have seen more voltage regulators go bad than alt. on the 254/284 tractors

Depends on the alternator type. Type “A” will run a jumper from BAT+ to the F field terminal. Type “B” will jump from the F field terminal to the alternator case or a good ground. If you're not familiar with how to do this (you can toast an alternator very quickly), just take the alternator to an auto supply store where they will usually test it for free.

took the alt. off and took it to autozone and o'riellys what a joke, unless they can put a p/n in the tester that they match up with the parts catalog computer up front they cant test crap. so i went home and got down to basics, what do i have 1)stator, do a

continuity test on the 3 terminals all test the same with no shorts to ground  2) rotor, test good no shorts to ground some kind black stuff on one slip ring had a hard time with the test lead on it had to poke it to get it to read cleand it up looks good 3) diode, check all one way then  the otheir, get the same readings on all, high one way low the otheir.  will put together and see. thanks for the in put       john in arizonacool

Replace the voltage regulator, Call Tommy or Ronald.

But remember, that's only a 14 amp alternator so don't expect a lot from it, like keeping up with the headlights, etc. laugh

mine running only puts out 12.9.

i checked as replaced battery, thought wow its a bit low.

never had no probs starting, done a alternator test by amps and osciliscope and yeah. its fine just dead weak.

i got about 12 or 13 amps, cant remember the rpm.

it looked to me that the regulator was set low to 12.9

i do see cars with regs set at 13 to 14.4v

i only see 14.4v on jap stuff.

                        uk just toucing 14v.

you need to know how much the watts are on the bulbs when on.

i dont think my tractor has a charge light, im pretty sure.

it has 3 wires on back of alternator.

same as yours by the sound.

oh forgot, watts x volts will give you the amps.

so look at each bulb, get the watts off it.

x it by 12v or 13v add together all your wattage then times the volts and thats your answer.

remember you need to work out all power usage, everything that takes power.

where as me i use a amps clamp.

oh and if you are using 10 amps, you wont get 10 amps out of your tractor if at low revs, will need to be more like 2000 rpm to balance it out.

so try not to stop and start to much unless you throw away that alternator and replace with a car alternator, dont go to big as will steal alot of engine power.

about a 40amp will be plenty, will put a noticeable strain on there when charging, running heavy loads etc.
