Started out that I thought the battery was dead. Would turn the key and just hear a click sound. Jumped it with a battery charger and it started.
Charged the battery, but still just got the click sound. Took the battery to a local battery distributor who tested the battery and said that it was good. Said that they do a load test and that the battery was delivering in the neighborhood of 1080 CCA. Said that there was a problem somewhere else in the system and not the battery. So if anyone has any idea where to look, I'd appreciate the info. Now, also, when my son went to hook the battery back up, he accidentally hooked it up backwards. Would this damage anything? Now when we engage the disconnect, smoke seem to be coming from the alternator. da

somethings a polarity reversal is very bad anything with a computer control , alt.has a good chance of being toast.

Alternators need the smoke inside for lubrication, they don't work so well once you let it out.

Does your son have a job?
I see a new alternator, voltage regulator, and battery in your future. Very rarely can polarity reversal of a battery be corrected.
Things to check are all of the battery connections, including the ground to frame, positive cable at the solenoid, and all wiring harness connectors. Once you get all your new parts installed we can continue.

Next question would be a parts supplier. Where?

At the top of the page is a tab for “our dealers”. Affordable and Ranch Hand are dealers that have a large stock and support this site answering questions on their own time. Keno has a large stock as well, kinda depends on where you live.
One question just so we are clear; when was the battery hooked up backwards, when charging the battery or connecting it to the tractor after charging and testing?
You could remove the alternator and have it tested at a parts store but all joking aside if it smoked it's toast.

It was hooked up backwards after I had taken it to be tested. I'm sure
you are right about the alternator. I was wondering if there was a way to bypass the alternator and still start the engine? I'd like to move it into the garage. Also, I appreciate you guys responding.

I would try unplugging (disconnecting) the alternator and regulator and if the key switch doesn't do it jumping the starter solenoid, just make sure you are in neutral. I don't know your comfort level working on this sort of thing but you can replace the alternator and regulator with a Delco GM style alternator with built in regulator. They bolt up with little modification, quite a few people here have done this. The factory alternator is only around 14 amps, you can get a Delco marine alt with 115 amps on Amazon for $65.00.

When I can afford to I will do this and ad a power inverter to run an electric pole saw.

The other way to start this is to disconnect any other wires coming off the starter so you only have a positive cable coming from the battery to the starter, nothing else. Then jump the starter to start, again making sure you are in neutral.

Okay, was able to get generator and regulator from Guys at Keno,
which gets us to the starter. It seems this was the issue from the get go. Keno says that they have no idea what this starter is. Here is what I got off the tag.
Here is the number that I got off of that starter. QD1388A
Only other info on the tag was : 12V 200 1.8kw
I am pretty certain that it has a Laidong engine.
We have taken the starter apart and cleaned it out, but still nothing.
Any ideas?

If you have a good starter ,atl. rebuilding service near you it might be best to let them see if it is something they can fix,or identify.
