As to setting the gap on the clutch I would use a piece of hardwood( like oak)to what ever length you think you need and rip on table saw to the width you want and check with a good measuring device. If I remember right some have had issues with the springs failing in the pressure plate, I hope this is not the issue, that is a tractor split. Get your clearances and try adjusting the clutch first but I do not know if it will help I keep going back to you stating there was a lot of pedal travel, that would indicate the clutch was engaging the flywheel whereas if there was no pedal travel the clutch was slightly held off the flywheel. good luck
I would get another person to push the clutch pedal in and out as you look at the linkages, maybe you can see a lack of movement giving you a idea of there is a pin failure. As I remember people in the past were using split pins and inserting one inside the other to give them a little more metal to help prevent breakage. where are you located? As I think about this if , as you mentioned you had a lot of play maybe that pin was cracked giving the excess play and then completely gave out. When you figure this out I would make sure that the clutch play is correct to make sure wear is made normal.
free play should be around one inch , with that try to adjust in some free play hopefully you will get some if not it is clutch time.
I assume your brake drums are external next to the rims and the oil seals have leaked . since I know nothing about your tractor this is just a guess ,look at the pedals and follow the linkages to the brakes would be my best guess, some of these chinese tractors use a band brake system they should be on the rear end housing.
I do not have a clue but you can try to assume that if around the oil filter housing if there is a oil line that goes to the injector pump it gets oil from the engine, no line it uses its own built in reservoir. I use 15/40 engine oil in those. they do not use much oil and are slow to fill.
yeah I have left it alone I took the mower off the tractor (bought new zero turn) and put a tiller on it so it does not get the use that it was getting.
there is nothing wrong with going old school, but a good quality joystick vs the chinese ones would have fixed it too. I have a joystick in a 2001 backhoe with over 4000 hrs and never touched it.
I know nothing about your tractor but is it possible that it has wet brakes , if so they would be inside the rear end, not at the wheels.
can you see any movement in the linkage that goes to the wheel area? in other words have you checked for any sheared pins in the linkage joints? this is just a guess for a place to start. if you split the brakes at the pedal does the brakes feel different from one side to the other?
I guess he figured it out ,and I wonder what happened to the 1st gear to make it fail? guess we shall never know. another mystery of life. hahahahaha
