      Sorry Len,

      4 + 1 (off) = 5   yell roflmao

Thanx to Larry and Eric for backing me up  hailking

You might have to hold it there a might longer depending on how cold it is and how the battery condition is. Weak battery will cause it to take longer and then risk the problem of not enough juice to crank it.  frown

After engaging the de-compression lever and cranking (to build up fluids), switch the glowplugs on for approx 25 seconds. Then go to start.

I truly have no special skills

You sir… are underestimating yourself. Rather impressive. I agree with Bert.  wink

The best I can do is stab some wood together after altering it's structure with my Shopsmith. But I like attempting to do woodworking. I find it somewhat relaxing after working on things that require moving parts. Even making some simple birdhouses that aren't perfect allows me the satisfaction of knowing I gave a home to some critter.  neener

          Howdy Len,

How many positions does the key switch have? If there is 4 positions, then it's probably hooked to the glowplug circuit. Others are hooked to a toggle switch on the dash. You push that while cranking until it starts.

            Len,

The idea of the compression lever is to open it during cold weather while cranking to allow the engine to turn around a few times to get the “fluids” moving to lubricate. Then you close it and… presto!… the engine starts!

Or at least that's the idea behind it. It doesn't allow compression to build up but allows the engine to crank. It is supposedly to “reduce wear and tear”. Personally, I very rarely mess with it. Only when the 284 has sat a long time.

              Thanks Hal  hailking

You've put a lot of time into making this change work. Wasn't too keen on it at first, but have been fumbling around enough to make it work. REALLY want to thank you for figuring out to get to the old forums.  kissass

Too much info there to have lost that! Keeps us from having to go over problems all over again    deadhorseholeagain

                Len,

I use a 6″ for any chain link metal poles or other small poles. I use a 9″ for any bigger poles that I will cement in. Sounds to me you are needing the 9″. You can always look for a good deal on a used 6″ later.  wink

                  Welcome Bob, cool

On your way to SpringValley's place, you have to go right by mine after you take that left. You're more than welcome to stop by for a cup of coffee (or a beer).  wink

Also idahobob may I suggest that you join the CTOA. If you own a 284, you will need to make use of this website. Hey… it's $15 well spent. You will probably need to PM some of the members about problems. They have helped me avoid a lot of costly mistakes.  holeagain

                    Just a thought… hmmm

Still mostly true Bob. Although they are using more of their parts nowdays. But they are easier to work on. You can't really find any piece of equipment nowdays that use “their parts” exclusively.

Even a Harley Davidson uses Japanese parts… go figure  neener

It would be assumed it was a good product as Iveco is a sub company of Mercedes Benz. If more are needed than the five listed, then you could try looking in that direction. Having worked on both Iveco and Mercedes trucks, I found them to be pretty good. Although I'm still partial to Kenworths and Peterbuilts.  wink
