Just for information in case anyone out there reading this is not aware that their dozer also has a high speed PTO, it is located behind the rectangular cover plate directly above the low speed PTO shaft. The hydraulic pump off the LW-6 backhoe bolts straight on. Probably same arrangement on the tractors, can anyone confirm?

So now I am curious to know the reasons why you guys prefer to run PTO pumps and bear the cost of maintaining two separate hydraulic systems, especially when your tractor already has hydraulic couplings plumbed so all you really need to do is buy mating couplings and possibly lengthen the feed and return hoses?

Hi Clayton,
Fuel, air and compression – necessary factors for diesel engine combustion. One of these is missing.
If you removed the valve cover to mess with the glow plugs you have to ensure the decompression lever fork seats correctly on the pin, otherwise when you tighten the cover nuts the valves will be held open giving the symptoms you describe. Check this first.
My engine doesn't need glow to start either when I have a fully charged battery.

I see what you are talking about in Jim's 1st photo above, the copper tube extending vertically from the exhaust manifold. My engine is 2001 and doesn't have it, must be a later addition.

North eastern Australia. Yes lots more wear than should be for 380 hrs. I will try to get another pic posted tomorrow that better shows the wear pattern.

Can't see any such valve on my engine. Does your dozer have one?

Hi Len,
The filter usually goes on the return line just before it enters the tank. That way it intercepts foreign matter floating around in the system and prevents recirculation and accumulation of this gunk in your tank. A fine mesh strainer should be fitted to your suction line which stops any foreign material before it can damage your pump. These are usually internally mounted and accessed for cleaning by removal of a coverplate at the base of the reservoir however they are available as an inline component as well.
Something you might like to consider is forgetting the pto pump altogether and running your backhoe off the tractor hydraulics. I have done this mod to my dozer by tapping into the 3pt linkage feed and installing a selector valve which either lifts my linkage or directs flow to the hydraulic couplings. Works really well for my backhoe. In your situation it might even work out cheaper than replacing the gearbox. Can post some pics and skematics if you decide to go that way.
Good luck finding adaptors. Cut and crimp new fittings. When all else fails I get the shop to braze a standard hydraulic thread onto the chinese fitting.

My dozer has a worse problem when operating on declines. It starts running on engine oil. Shut off the diesel yet the revs keep climbing then it becomes a race to the nearest flat area before the engine can self-destruct. Scary stuff believe me. It hasn't always done this. I took it down a prolonged steep grade while it was still new and all it did was change tone and spout smoke as others on this thread have described.
The first engine overrun occurred at about 180 hours. I made a mod (pictured) to the valve cover where the breather tube enters but this failed to solve the problem. After that I blocked the tube entirely which delivered no improvement. Thought about the possibility of oil leaking past the valve stems on #1 cylinder but not sure if that alone would be enough to cause a runaway engine. Thoughts anyone?

Well I cut out the steel about 4 years ago but never got around to completing it. Now most of the steel has been used up in other projects so I will have to buy more. Using tines from the box blade plus 3 taller ones which extend above the dozer blade to stop branches dropping over the top when windrowing. Can you post a pic of yours?
