That sounds like a good strategy to me. The last time I split wood the grandson helped me stack, but I think there was an alterior motive. I picked the wife up a 6 wheel gas golf cart with a dump bed and he would load it and drive it to where I stack the fire wood. The wife says to me “Hey did you get that for me or you”. I told her to talk to the grandson.
The base is a flat plate with three nubbins. It'll go vertical or horizontal. I've put some knarly pieces on it and it goes thru it like butter. I put some 4ft diameter pieces in it split it in half. It has an automatic return and kickout and there are two small arms on the cylinder end that will strip off any pieces that stick on the wedge. I run the tractor on 1000 rpm and it'll go thru anything. Now stackings more work than splitting. I bought it at Rural King on sale for $600.00, my little 3.5 horse gas splitter I paid $750.00 for in 1980 and this will work circles around it.
The ground firmed up so I got the splitter back out.
I went to Rural King and picked up a slide lock. It works great. Push the lever forward and slide the barrel over. The nuts and lock washers were a real bear on the back side of the decking. I had to get the wife with smaller hands to do two of them. It's done and works good!
I relooked at it and a hinge wont work because of the deck angle to the arm a hinge wont clear. I'm thinking maybe a slide lock might work, should have enough clearance. I just wasnt coming up with anything a you got me started thinking (sometimes that can be dangerous) lol – thank you.
The pressure out is forward which puts a bungee cord in the way of where your feet go. I've been looking at it and have thought about tack welding a small hinge to the decking where the handle extends to that way I could move the handle forward and flip the hinge over to lock it. So far thats all I've came up with.
lol! Ya, I know. We went to the property for the day to put the hoe in the barn and repair the gate where a deer hit it. That sucker hit it so hard it busted the concrete around the posts. Ended up working all day and I still had all the tools and stuff to unload so once was all I was going to try. Didn't think it would be that small! I'll try again when the wife is thru with the computer, can't do it on the smart tv.
Finally!!
